Because the winter cold makes us hungry, let’s talk about food …
Speaking of the cold season, our friends at Hog Island Oyster Co. point out that oysters are loaded with zinc (an immune booster), vitamin D (hard to get when sunlight is scarce) and other nutrients. Another excuse to slurp them up.
A new way to combat pollution: eat it. Fish 2.0 alum NovoNutrients reports “remarkable results” in its play to produce food for farmed fish by letting microbes loose on industrial gas emissions. That means less air pollution and more fish chow that’s not made from other fish.
Do you drink organic milk—or just pay to think you do? The Cornucopia Institute, which has been outing “organic” dairies that don’t meet grass pasturing rules, is prodding the USDA to look at fluorescence spectroscopy—a fast, affordable way to prove milk came from cows that dined al fresco.
All the presidents’ farms: Washington dug composting, Jefferson grew 330 varieties of 89 vegetables and herbs, Lincoln helped create the USDA, and the Roosevelts championed land conservation. That’s the good stuff—the Union of Concerned Scientists’ blog on presidents who shaped our food system dishes the dirt, too.
Mmm … weeds? Civil Eats explores whether foraging for lambsquarters, dandelion greens and such in parks and other urban green spaces could reduce food insecurity. One caution: you have to know what you’re picking and how to cook it so it “doesn’t taste like bubbling garbage.”
